How to Fix a Hacked WordPress Website
Fixing a hacked site
In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, a platform like WordPress is essential for creating websites without needing to learn coding. Its user-friendly content management system is incredibly simple to use.
Due to its dynamic nature and extensive customization options, WordPress is beloved by millions. However, with its growing popularity, it also becomes a target for hackers. New users, in particular, are often targeted, making WordPress a prime focus for cyber-attacks.
If your site falls victim to a hacker, your data, including content, client information, and payment gateways, could be at risk. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced user, addressing a hacked site and enhancing its security is crucial to maintaining your business’s operations.

How a WordPress Site Can Get Hacked
An updated WordPress application is less prone to hacking attempts, while outdated versions may be vulnerable.
Plugins, themes, and add-ons can expose a WordPress site to attacks.
Backdoor Attack: Poorly coded themes or plugins, or outdated WordPress installations, can allow hackers to access the backdoor easily. This is a serious threat that can compromise your client’s data and your business’s reputation.
Redirect Attack: In this type of attack, hackers redirect traffic from your website to a malicious site filled with harmful content designed to steal personal information or install viruses and malware on visitors’ systems. Similar to backdoor attacks, hackers often use custom software to scan WordPress sites for vulnerabilities to gain access and set up redirect codes.
Script Injection: This attack exploits any code on the site that allows forms to pull information. Once installed, the malicious code forces visitors to install harmful software, often disguised as legitimate applications. A common example is a popup warning that the user’s machine is infected and needs to be scanned.
Repairing a hacked site
The first step after a hack is to locate the breach. Then, repair the site and remove any damages quickly to keep it operational. Simultaneously, take preventive measures to avoid future attacks.
Fix of the hack
First, take your site offline immediately. If you’re unfamiliar with the WordPress backend, contact your hosting provider or a technical advisor.
To take your site offline while retaining access to the content, you need to access and change the database password. The database contains all the content but not the themes and plugins. You can change the password through the hosting control panel. While doing this, make sure to note your username, database name, host, table prefix, and new password, as you’ll need these details to reconnect your database to the new installation.
